Motorcycle Helmet: Four Basic Components
Outer Shell Component - Purpose
- Penetration Protection - protects against pointy or blunted objects trying to penetrate the inner lining of the helmet.
- Abrasion Protection - protects against abrasions and cuts to the face and head.
- Strong fiber - reinforced composites - like Fiberglass / Kevlar, Thermoplastics, Carbon Fibers or other materials are designed to compress and disperse energy from the impact to lessen the force before it reaches your head.
- Fashion Statemnet - provides a sommoth srface for paint, decals and graphic designs.
Impact - Absorbing Inner Lining - Purpose
- EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) material absorbs most of the energy (impact shock by compressing and spreading the forces of impact throughout the helmet material.
- Cushions and absorbs the energy shock as the helmet stops and brings your head to agentle stop after a collision.
- Protection against diffused brain injuries
Comfort Padding - Purpose
- Soft Foam - and Cloth layer that sits next to your head.
- Provides a comfortable and snug fit. Helmets should fit snugly or tightly around your head.
- Some padding can be removed for cleaning.
Retention System or Chin Strap - purpose
- Chin strap keeps the helmet on your head during a crash.
