    Anatomy of the Motorcycle Helmet

    Motorcycle Helmet: Four Basic Components

    Outer Shell Component - Purpose

    1. Penetration Protection - protects against pointy or blunted objects trying to penetrate the inner lining of the helmet.
    2. Abrasion Protection - protects against abrasions and cuts to the face and head.
    3. Strong fiber - reinforced composites - like Fiberglass / Kevlar, Thermoplastics, Carbon Fibers or other materials are designed to compress and disperse energy from the impact to lessen the force before it reaches your head.
    4. Fashion Statemnet - provides a sommoth srface for paint, decals and graphic designs.

Impact - Absorbing Inner Lining - Purpose

    1. EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) material absorbs most of the energy (impact shock by compressing and spreading the forces of impact throughout the helmet material.
    2. Cushions and absorbs the energy shock as the helmet stops and brings your head to agentle stop after a collision.
    3. Protection against diffused brain injuries

    Comfort Padding - Purpose

    1. Soft Foam - and Cloth layer that sits next to your head.
    2. Provides a comfortable and snug fit. Helmets should fit snugly or tightly around your head.
    3. Some padding can be removed for cleaning.

Retention System or Chin Strap - purpose

    1. Chin strap keeps the helmet on your head during a crash.
