DOT (FMVSS-218) - Every Helmet must meet DOT Standards for street or highway use in the United States.
-
HelmetsUp safety tests each helmet model at two strategic testing sites in the manufacturing process to ensure the DOT safety standard is met.
The first testing site is the manufacturing site. The manufacturer randomly pulls samples of each production order and conducts a DOT - FMVSS 218 motorcycle helmet safety test. If any of the helmets fail to meet DOT standards the entire purchase order is withdrawn and we will not accept any of those helmet models until the factor responsible for the failure is corrected and the manufacturer conducts testing for new samples.
The second testing site is an independent laboratory in the United States. We randomly test samples of products after we receive them. If these samples by chance fail the DOT testing, HelmetsUp returns the entire manufacturer’s shipment of those helmets.
Please understand that the entire DOT safety standard is voluntary and based on the manufacturer’s statement that the products meet DOT safety standards. This “voluntary” compliance based solely on the word or guarantee of the manufacturer is not up to the safety standards of HelmetsUp. We consider our company to be the “safety guardians” for all consumers of safety helmets.

ECE (22-05) - European standard of safety accepted by more than 50 countries
-
BSI (6658) - Safety standard for Britain
-
Snell (M2000/M2005) - A voluntary private standard

The Snell Foundation utilizes the highest safety standards in the helmet industry. This organization is perhaps the number one “safety guardian” for the consumer. Every five years the Snell Foundation amends and updates the requirements for manufacturers to meet and pass the Safety Rating Compliance. The manufacturer is given the specifications for constructing a Snell Safety product. The manufacturer must send samples of the proposed Snell rated products to the Snell Foundation for testing. Once the product passes the rigid testing criteria, the Snell foundation issues numbered certificate stickers that the manufacturer must place on the inside of each helmet - usually under the removable pads and lining. So, if you are thinking about purchasing a Snell Safety Rated Helmet look for the certification sticker inside of the helmet.
